10:55 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. – Free Her: The Impact of the Criminal Justice System on Black Women and Girls in Louisiana
Angel Harris, The Justice Collaborative
Nia Weeks, Citizen SHE United

  • This CLE will focus on the intersectional issues Black women and girls face when they enter the criminal court system and the impact those issues have on their representation. Black women are impacted by racial and gender bias in all aspects of their lives, causing many to be socially and economically disadvantaged. However, the complexity of Black women’s identities is largely ignored in the criminal court system. Black women living in Louisiana, specifically in New Orleans, face many systemic barriers, which cause them to be entangled in various branches of the legal system. Unfortunately, most attorneys, legal systems, and indigent assistance providers do not have the training nor the insight into the breadth of issues that socially and economically disadvantaged women face and do not take their circumstances into account when giving legal counsel.
