DESCRIPTION:Tough\, Ambitious\, Different: Women Moving Up the Ranks of Bar Leadership \nIn 2019\, female law students comprise approximately half of law school enrollments; however\, leadership statistics within the legal profession do not reflect a comparable female presence. This discussion will highlight the important benefits that female attorney leaders bring to the legal profession and bar associations in particular. Panelists will share their unique journeys to the leadership ranks of their bar associations\, and they will analyze the events\, people\, and circumstances that hampered and aided them along the way. Panelists also will identify strategies\, avoidable pitfalls\, and resources for female attorneys aspiring to assume leadership roles within bar associations. SUMMARY:Black History Month CLE: Civil Rights
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Greater New Orleans Louis A. Martinet Legal Society (“GNO Martinet”)\, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana\, and our other partner organizations for a truly historic CLE. Throughout Black History Month\, GNO Martinet has celebrated the efforts of our local leaders to bring about change during the Civil Rights Movement. This CLE features four panelist who were instrumental figures in bring an end to segregation in New Orleans. Sybil Morial is educator\, activist\, and community leader in New Orleans\, Louisiana. In her memoir\, “Witness to Change: From Jim Crow to Political Empowerment”\, Mrs. Morial discussed how she and her contemporaries fight against segregation brought about the change that allowed her to become the first African American First Lady of the city of New Orleans. Ernest Jones was partner of the legendary law firm Cotton\, Jones & Dennis. Mr. Jones successfully defended the Black Panthers in 1971. Dr. Norman C. Francis\, a founder of the Louis A. Martinet Legal Society\, was the first African American to graduate from Loyola University School of Law. Dr. Francis led Xavier University for over 40 years. The Honorable “Moon” Landrieu served as the 56th Mayor of New Orleans from 1970 to 1978. Moon Landrieu desegregated city government and public facilities appointing African-Americans to top positions. \nPlease attend this CLE to hear these distinguished panelist views on the past\, present and future of the civil rights in the United States. The CLE is free to all who attend. Attendees will receive 1.5 Hours of CLE Credit.
